Social Emotional Learning Round Table – September 18
I am so excited to announce our third round table which will be held on September 18, 2018 at Kiker in our cafeteria at 6:30pm. Our focus will be on social and emotional learning (SEL) at Kiker Elementary. We will review the Austin Independent School District SEL Core Competencies, discuss practical applications of classroom and school-wide SEL instruction/programming, and solicit input as to your hopes, dreams, and desires for your children.
As has been noted in different communications the district approved SEL instructional curriculum is Second Step and we implement it at the classroom level. The school does not endorse or teach any other program/models so concerns regarding previous models will not addressed.

Principal’s Message – 28 Aug, 2018
Hello Kiker Comets,
My name is David Crissey and I am so very proud and excited to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. My 24 year journey as a public educator started in Rochester, New York, where I grew up and eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in History. After graduation I moved to Pensacola, Florida where I studied at the University of West Florida and earned my Master of Arts in Special Education. I was a special education teacher for nine years prior to moving into my administrative career. I spent two years working as a district administrator supporting school campuses by creating and managing programs for students with behavioral challenges. I subsequently moved into school-based administration and spent eight years as an elementary school administrator, four as assistant principal and four as principal. Additionally, I served as an adjunct professor at the University of West Florida for over a decade teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses. We moved to Austin three years ago and upon arrival I proudly served on the administrative team at William B. Travis Early College High School. I was announced as Kiker’s fifth principal on April 30, 2018 and I have been absolutely amazed at the warm and genuine support I have received during the past few months.
Bernice Kiker Elementary School is an exceptional school and I am humbled to serve alongside such a distinguished group of passionate students, educators, parents, and community partners. The 2017-2018 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings were recently released placing Kiker Elementary firmly in the #1 spot of all elementary schools in central Texas. Kiker Elementary is a living and breathing example of how everything is truly bigger and better in Texas.
I am here for you. If you ever need a moment with me please do not hesitate to contact the main office or simply drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your children, their educational success, and their well-being and safety is of the utmost importance to me; nothing is more precious than your child and I will do everything in my power to ensure their happiness.
I am what’s right with Kiker Elementary and so are you.
Together we are Kiker.
David S. Crissey
